Ingredients

Bites Ingredients

  • 6 rolls Kings Hawaiian rolls Classic sweet rolls for the base.
  • 3 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup milk or coconut milk Any milk option works.
  • 0.5 cup ube halaya or ube jam For the best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter For pan toasting.

Strawberry Maple Syrup

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries Washed and chopped.
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup For sweetening the strawberries.

Instructions

Preparation of the Custard

  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, ube halaya, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until mostly smooth.

Preparing the Rolls

  • Split or cut the Kings Hawaiian rolls into bite-sized pieces, preferably thirds.

Dipping and Cooking

  • Quickly dip each roll piece into the custard mixture on all sides without soaking.
  • Melt butter in a nonstick pan over medium heat.
  • Place the dipped bites in the pan and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Dust with powdered sugar if desired and drizzle with the strawberry maple syrup.

Notes

These bites are best enjoyed immediately after cooking to retain their crispness. For best storage, cool and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a toaster oven for best results.
