Ingredients

For the Marinade

  • 1 kg thinly sliced beef (top round or sirloin) Choose a lean cut for best results.
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 3 pieces calamansi or lemon Calamansi is preferred but lemon works fine.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil For pan-frying.
  • 3 large onions, sliced Use big, round white onions for best texture.

Instructions

Marinating Beef

  • Mix soy sauce, calamansi juice, black pepper, and minced garlic in a bowl.
  • Add the thinly sliced beef and marinate for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer for deeper flavor.

Cooking the Beef

  • Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the marinated beef strips in a single layer; do not overcrowd to ensure proper searing.
  • Cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side, then remove from the pan.
  • Pour in the marinade and let it simmer briefly.

Cooking the Onions

  • In the same pan, add the sliced onions and cook until they are translucent, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Combine with the beef and marinade before serving.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve over steamed white rice and top with a fried egg if desired.
  • Consider adding a side of garlicky fried rice.
  • Offer extra calamansi wedges for those who like a zesty flavor.

Notes

For tender beef, slice against the grain and avoid overcooking. Leftovers taste even better the next day.
